Post-holiday blues: Tips for seniors on staying active and connected

CALABASH, NC (WWAY) — While we continue into the new year, many people may find themselves experiencing the post-holiday blues this month, especially seniors.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 64% of people reported being affected by seasonal depression around this time.

For many seniors, those feelings of sadness can come after family and friends return home after the holidays.

Lee Caulder is co-owner of Seniors Helping Seniors, a company that provides non-medical in-home care and companionship for seniors.

Caulder said seniors should focus on three areas of activity: Social activity, which includes spending time with friends or community, mental activity, which are things that can keep your mind sharp like completing puzzles or reading, and physical activity.

“Things like if I’m going to use the restroom, instead of using the closest restroom, use the restroom that’s the furthest away so that I stay active and stay physically focused,” Caulder said. “Making sure that you’re taking care of yourself both physically and mentally is critical.”

Caulder added another way to keep your mind sharp is learning new technologies that may be beneficial, like learning to video call friends and family.
