Prevent winter fires: Expert heating safety tips

CAPE FEAR, NC (WWAY) — Pender County has experienced multiple house fires this week, leaving four families without homes.

Fire Marshal Amy Burton says improper heating methods are likely to blame.

“The majority of those have been due to heating—whether that be portable space heaters, wood-burning fireplaces, etc.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating is the leading cause of home fires and fire-related deaths from December to February.

The improper use of external heating sources often leads to these tragedies.

While central heating is the safest option, space heaters can be an effective alternative when used correctly.

“Make sure space heaters are placed on a level, nonflammable surface and give each heater at least three feet of space. Never put a heater near a Christmas tree, never leave it on while you sleep, and always make sure the heater is turned off or the embers are out before leaving your home.”

Firefighter Kadin Garcia with the Wilmington Fire Department warned about older portable heaters.

“Older space heaters don’t have the same safety features as newer models, like automatic shutoffs when they overheat or tip over.”

Burton also stressed the dangers of unconventional heating methods.

“In rural areas, I understand not everyone has central heating, and you’re doing the best you can. But leaving an oven door open to heat your home is not a safe option.”

If you’re unsure about the safest way to heat your home, Burton encourages reaching out for help.

“You can always call your local fire department or the Pender County Fire Marshal’s office. We’re happy to come out and help with placement or advise on safer options. We also have services in the county that can assist with providing more warmth for your family.”
