Public forum decides fate of North Topsail Island
TOPSAIL ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Washing away … that’s what some Topsail Island homeowners are afraid of. Town Council made a decision on the future of property on the North end of Topsail Island Thursday night.
Town Council held a public forum during its Board of Aldermen meeting to talk about the serious erosion problem on the north end of the island. Citizens sounded off on what they think should be done to repair the damage.
The hot-button issue has folks split on whether the town should be paying for the much needed sandbags.
“I’m in support of it because if we don’t get sandbags in front of our houses as quickly as possible there will be no houses.” Cinda Sullivan, a homeowner said. “If there are no houses it’ll reach the road there will be no water or sewer for the rest of the houses inland.”
“I don’t agree that the town should be footing the bill for the sandbags,” another homeowner Beverly Grisales said. “You know you take a chance. Everyone has the same information you know when you buy land in certain areas that are not buildable you’re taking that risk.”
Town Council voted unanimously to proceed with the sandbag revitalization by footing half of the bill to save the homes in the area.
