Public meeting planned for town contaminated over 4 decades

NAVASSA, NC (AP) — Federal and state agencies will hear from the public about a plan to restore the natural resources in a Brunswick County town contaminated for several decades by a wood treatment operation.

The hearing will be held Tuesday evening at the Mt. Calvary AME Church in Navassa. . It starts at 6 p.m.

Federal and state authorities are developing a plan to restore the natural resources affected by the contamination from the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp.  They’re asking the public for ideas for restoring natural resources damaged over four decades by creosote-based wood treatments that occurred from the mid-1930s until 1974.

The area was added to the federal Superfund program in 2010.

Funds from a $23 million settlement will be used for the restoration of the Navassa region, which includes the Cape Fear River watershed.
