Publix opens its first store in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – From Walmart, to Food Lion and Harris Teeter, Wilmington shoppers have their choice of supermarkets. Starting Wednesday, they’ll have one more.

Publix is set to open its doors on South College Road at 7:00 a.m..

It’s not just Wilmington’s first Publix, but the first Publix in coastal North Carolina.

The chain says even with all the other supermarkets around, its new Pine Valley location just made sense. It says it’s been looking at Wilmington for a while.

“It’s a great tourism destination and the beaches are attractive, but there are a lot of people here and a lot of loyal customers here. This was an area we continue to receive requests who’ve known us in other areas and asked us to come to the community,” said Kim Reynolds, a company spokesperson.

Reynolds say the chain is continuing to expand its landscape. She says more Publix could open soon across the Cape Fear area.
