Push for indoor pickleball facility in Leland

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A unique sport has taken over Brunswick County, and now one man is pushing to create a facility to bring more people to the area.

It is called pickleball, and it has hundreds of people picking up the paddle. Pickleball fanatic, Richard Holloman says it is a fun sport played with a paddle and wiffle ball, combining tennis, badminton, and ping pong into one game.

Rainy days do put a damper on the game, that is why Holloman wants the town to build an indoor facility. A proposal he introduced to the Leland Economic Development Commission Tuesday night.

Holloman says the indoor facility would bring pickleball players from all over the country for tournaments and also benefit the town economically.

“Our goal is just to educate them on a little bit more on what’s going on with pickleball, most of them already have a feel for it. But to talk about what we can do to make Leland a real pickleball destination and that starts with an indoor facility to play pickleball,” Holloman said.

Holloman also says he has a developer backing this idea who understands the vision of pickleball and will help get the project up and running.
