Race for the Planet returns Sunday, supports conservation efforts
KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A weekend 5K in the Cape Fear region is combining fitness and environmental awareness as the Race for the Planet returns Sunday.
The event, hosted by the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, is part of the aquarium’s 50th anniversary celebration.
The race is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, at 8 a.m., with a 5K course and a one-mile fun run option for families. Organizers say the course has been adjusted this year, with a new start and finish location at Battle Acre, while maintaining the same distance. A virtual race option will also be available from April 20 through April 27.
Deyanira Romo Rossell, communications manager for the aquarium, said the event supports environmental efforts tied to the facility’s mission.
“All of the proceeds benefit the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher green initiatives,” Rossell said, including sustainability projects and beach cleanups.
Organizers are also encouraging participants to reduce waste during the event by avoiding single-use plastics.
Following the race, a community celebration is planned to mark the aquarium’s 50th anniversary, featuring family-friendly activities and entertainment.
The North Carolina Aquarium system was established in 1976 as marine science centers and later renamed aquariums in 1986. Officials say the milestone highlights decades of conservation work and community engagement across the state.
