Racing for the gold to help children and teens with cancer

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was a race to the finish line as teams competed against each other for the top prize and to raise money for a good cause.

Hope Abounds hosted a go-cart race at Jungle Rapids Saturday to raise money for children and teens battling cancer.

Before starting, everyone walked a lap around the track in honor of cancer survivors.

WWAY was there too! Scott, Helen, Amanda, and Stephanie raced in the event.

Co-Founder Kenny Barnes says it’s a fun way to help out a family going through a tough time.

“It’s really been a lot of fun,” Barnes said. “Certainly, who ever crossed the finish line first or last, it didn’t matter because what we are working to do is to have that finish line for that kid and that family that is going through a cancer journey.”

This was the first time Hope Abounds has held this type of event. Barnes says they were just hoping to raise as much money as possible.

Thad and Harrison Moffitt, grandsons of the famous NASCAR driver, Richard Petty, were also participants of the race.
