Rafael Martinez’s family says he tried to protect his friend, in Market Street Parking Deck Shooting
WALLACE, NC (WWAY)– In a new exclusive video, it shows David Corpus lying on the floor at the parking structure on market street after he was shot Sunday morning.
He is being helped by multiple medics and an unidentified woman. Law enforcement officers responded, and moments later you can hear gunfire.
In another angle, it captures images of Edilberto Espinosa Sierra driving his blue charger and passing law enforcement officers who command him to stop. The car goes out of view. We hear more gunfire
Sierra succumbed to his injuries, and now the SBI is investigating the circumstances
Shortly after the shooting, Wilmington Police arrested and charged sierra’s friend, 22- year-old Rafael Martinez of Wallace, with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
One witness named Stella, says Corpus, alongside the woman, who is Martinez’s Ex-Girlfriend, confronted their group as they were ready to go home.
“We were just going out to the club, and next thing you know, this girl, and she was talking to Beto’s friend. I guess there was a confrontation, and they started going at it. As soon as we got on the second floor, her boyfriend came to our group and started the fight,” said Stella.
Stella confirms to us that Corpus, who can be seen in a grey shirt, is hitting Sierra on the ground in the corner of the video.
Sierra’s family says that due to his injuries, they believe he was concussed, which they believed is the reason he didn’t comply with the command of the officers as he was lost.
Russel Martinez, the younger brother of Rafael, who is translating for his mom, Johana Martinez, says they believe Martinez shot corpus to protect his life-long friend Sierra.
“I suppose that seeing his friends was on the floor, or probably worse, my son thought they had hurt him really badly, so probably like how they accused him of getting a gun. It was in self-defense,” said Martinez.
For the Martinez family, the situation gets worse, as they fear the possibility of him getting deported now that there is an ice detainer on his case.
“I’m going to keep believing in god, and I will always pray for him”
While Martinez waits for his next hearing, Sierra’s family also agrees that he was trying to save their son, before his death.
They say they have had zero contact with Corpus, or any of the other members involved.
Genesis Espinosa Sierra, who is translating for her mom, says this all could have been prevented. They demand justice for Sierra.
“They could have shot his tires, but not killed my son,” said Sierra.
Sierra’s family encourages anybody who has video or images of what happened, to come out and share it with them.
