Ramadan underway, area Muslims approach the month with mixed emotions
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Ramadan is underway and Muslims worldwide will observe what they call the “holy month” until April 9.
Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar. For Muslims, the month will include fasting, prayer, and more time spent reading the Qur’an.
WWAY spoke with father and daughter, Musa and Deana Agil. They are Palestinian American’s who live in Wilmington.
They said the start of this Ramadan has been more difficult than past years, knowing that many are going without much needed resources—and even dying in the Gaza Strip.
“There’s communities that don’t and that makes it challenging. So, I think Muslims do believe Ramadan comes at a good time and I think all of us are, sort of, having heavy hearts and it’s a good time for us to connect,” Deana Agil said.
Both Deana and Musa said, at this time, they’ll concentrate on praying for peace.
