Recent bride shares her journey after double jaw surgery

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — 30-year-old Rachel Lynch says was self-conscious about her overbite for years.

Lynch’s orthodontist told her she was actually suffering from a condition that made it harder to breathe through her nose, caused her to speak with a lisp, and caused a painful popping sensation in her jaw.

Her best option was double jaw surgery—a complex and invasive procedure that can take months to recover.

But at the time, Lynch knew she had big plans with her boyfriend.

“We weren’t engaged yet when I started this, but I knew a ring was coming and I said, you know, I want to make sure I finish this process by the time I’m walking down the aisle,” Lynch said.

Amazingly, a year after her surgery at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center Lynch had virtually no scars.

“I mean it was everything. I could say my vows mic’ed up for our videographer and not be thinking in the back of my head while I’m trying to get married about how my speech sounds and my lisp,” Lynch explained.

Lynch says she’s grateful for Dr. Michael Jaskolka and his team for making her special day—all the more perfect.

“People look at me like I’m lying and they’re like, ‘No way, like, where are the scars?’ and I think it’s incredible that I can sit here and say I had all of this done and it’s changed my life in so many ways, and I feel so much better. Like, my quality of life is so much better, and you can’t tell it’s been a huge difference by looking at me,” Lynch said.
