‘Relatively slow’ weekend for water rescues in Wrightsville Beach
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — While the beaches were busy, the lifeguards on duty in Wrightsville Beach say they didn’t have a high number of calls over Memorial Day weekend.
Between medical, boat, and water calls, Lieutenant Sam Proffitt says they averaged less than ten rescues a day.
Proffitt says there wasn’t much swell so most of the water rescues were due to longshore current.
This is the first weekend of the season lifeguards are in the stands and patrolling on ATVs and trucks.
Proffit says there are about 35 lifeguards on duty at a time.
“There has been a lot of people out here,” Proffitt said. “We have had a couple rescues each day, probably about averaging 8 rescues a day but other than that it’s been relatively slow.”
From now through Labor Day weekend, staff will be on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all week long.
Proffitt says they are all hands on deck and are ready for everyone to have safe summer season.
