Removal of rest of Vance Monument base in Asheville begins Tuesday

Work to remove what remains of Vance Monument in downtown Asheville will begin on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

In a news release on Monday, May 13, the city of Asheville said the contractor had begun the staging process for the work, which is expected to last two months.

Most of Vance Monument — an obelisk erected in 1898 to honor former Confederate officer and North Carolina Governor Zebulon Vance — was torn down in 2021 after nationwide and local protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd.

In the years since, the base has remained in Pack Square Park as a lawsuit to stop the monument’s removal moved through the court system.
