Repairs to Surf City Bridge fender to close boat traffic
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Town leaders said the recent damage to the swing bridge’s pilings and fender system will force the area to be closed to boating traffic.
According to the Town of Surf City’s Facebook page, the NCDOT will make the repairs starting Monday, August 17. The post said between 4 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. through Friday, the bridge will be closed to all boat traffic. At 8:30 a.m., the bridge will open to clear out any boats waiting then close again until noon. After a second opening at noon, the bridge will remain closed until 2 p.m. when normal operations will resume.
Town leaders said the contract for repairs is from August 17 to October 23, but town leaders said they hope there will be no work on Labor Day weekend. The DOT has yet to decide about that weekend, according to the post.
The repairs come after a large tug boat hit parts of the fender system in July.
