Report: Deputy driving an estimated 75mph at time of impact during deadly crash

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol has released its accident report on the fatal crash involving a Brunswick County sheriff’s deputy.
The crash happened Feb. 18 on U.S. 17.
According to the report, the deputy was driving an estimated 75 mph when he failed to stop at a red light and struck Cora Cartrette’s vehicle as she was turning onto Ploof Road.
The report states the deputy had his lights and sirens activated while responding to a vehicle pursuit in the area. Before the crash, he was estimated to be traveling at 90 mph.
After impact, the deputy’s vehicle veered off the road to the right and came to rest on the shoulder. Cartrette’s vehicle struck a curb, ran off the road and hit a utility pole.
Cartrette died at the scene.
The Highway Patrol said the complete investigation has not been finalized. As for potential charges, officials said they are continuing to work with the district attorney’s office.
