Resident reacts to facilities at the Port of Wilmington being required to control emissions after complaints
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Some New Hanover County residents near the Port of Wilmington are reacting to the latest announcement by the State Department of Environmental Quality.
After multiple citizen complaints, the DEQ announced earlier this week that Enviva Pellets, the wood pellet manufacturer’s storage and shipping facility on Turtle Dove Court, must develop a fugitive dust control plan – after DEQ identified that facility as the source of two substantiated fugitive dust complaints.
The plan must identify the sources of fugitive dust at the facility and methods to control the dust.
Ed Foraker told WWAY he’s been dealing with the dust for nearly eight years.
“They have to put in some controls on the dust, in place, I think they have 3 months or something like that. So, now they are doing something about it. Something’s being done and that feels good,” Foraker said.
DEQ also said Basaga International, a wood-chipping facility on Woodbine Street, must develop a plan after multiple dust complaints. DEQ expects to finalize the details of Basaga’s fugitive dust control plan in the coming days.
