WILMINTON, N.C. (WWAY) — While it may be a different game, how UNCW men’s basketball defeated Monmouth 79-69 on Thursday is nothing new.

Like most Seahawk games, it was filled with several lead changes and momentum swings before the home side finally pulled away once and for all.

UNCW led by five at halftime, only to then trail by nine almost immediately. But Head Coach Takayo Siddle managed to return the favor en route to a double-digit victory.

“The guys being player led, they talked about it. We knew we had to fix it right away. We didn’t come out with the right energy for some reason. When you’re playing against another really good team, they’re going to make runs. You can’t hang your head. You can’t let it deflate you. You have to respond like a championship-level team and make your own run. That’s just what it’s about.”

This wraps up a three game stretch out of four where UNCW played and defeated teams that were in the top three of the CAA standings.

Next for the men is a short turnaround as they will visit Campbell on Saturday.

In women’s basketball news, UNCW has signed Taylor O’Brien to the squad. The senior is a member of the women’s soccer team and is immediately available to play as a walk on.

This comes as the Seahawks were down to just six healthy players following their last game on Sunday. They are now on the road taking on a pair of CAA opponents in New York.
