Ribbon cutting ceremony held for newly renovated Columbus County Courthouse

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — In Columbus County, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday afternoon for the newly-renovated courthouse in Whiteville.

The two-story, classical revival-style building opened in 1914 but has been closed since 2015.

Renovations to the brick-and-concrete building cost nearly $7 million.

Workers removed all asbestos from the building and restored the courtroom to its original orientation.

Superior Court Judge Ashley Gore will have an office in the building which she said means a lot to her.

“It’s very special to me, not only professionally but personally,” Gore said. “I grew up in Whiteville so this building has been a part of my life since I was born. It is the most iconic building that we have in the county and it is certainly full of history and rich tradition and so to see it completely restored is wonderful.”

The courthouse will be used for Superior and civil court cases.
