Rip current awareness week begins

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the summer beach season kicks into high gear many of you will be hitting up area beaches and taking a dip. Rip current awareness week starts today.

If you’ll remember we’ve already had two reported deaths in the ocean in the last two months. In Carolina Beach, officials says a Charlotte man died in the waters on May 9.   Another swimmer went missing in Carolina Beach on May 29 and the body was found in Kure Beach a few days later.

Lifeguards say it is important to listen to warnings from emergency rescue officials and to check in throughout the day to make sure the water is still safe for swimming because danger levels can change.
