Road, bridge to be renamed for fallen officers in Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Two fallen law enforcement officers from southeastern North Carolina will be honored with permanent roadway designations following the passage of House Bill 23 by the North Carolina General Assembly.
Under Session Law 2025-67, the N.C. Department of Transportation is directed to rename two local transportation landmarks to memorialize officers who died in the line of duty.
The bridge on North Carolina Highway 904, which crosses the Columbus and Robeson County line, will be renamed the “Assistant Chief Lenneau D. Hammond Bridge.” Hammond, who served as Police Chief for the Fair Bluff Police Department, died in a car crash in 1976, while chasing two bank robbery suspects near Fairmont, according to historical records.
In a separate designation, Complex Street in the Town of Tabor City will be renamed “Shane Miller Street.” Patrolman Shane Miller died in a car crash in May of 2004, during a vehicle pursuit on his first shift as an officer with the Tabor City Police Department.
