Road closed, driver charged with DWI after truck crashes into utility pole on Oleander Drive

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A portion of Oleander Drive is closed after a truck crashed into a utility pole on Oleander Drive early Friday morning.

Wilmington Police officers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 2200 block of Oleander Drive.

According to the police, investigators determined that 30-year-old Jonathan Trainum was traveling eastbound on Oleander Drive in a full-size pickup truck when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck rolled and struck a utility pole carrying power and telephone equipment.

Police say the impact snapped the pole and scattered debris along Oleander Drive, extending to Mimosa Drive.

Officers on scene reported observing clear signs of impairment, and Trainum was taken into custody. He was charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving and open container.

A portion of Oleander Drive was closed due to downed utility lines and low-hanging wires. Barricades and traffic cones were placed to secure the area. At last check, the road remains closed while utility crews conduct repairs and cleanup operations are completed.

No additional injuries were reported.
