Road resurfacing to mean detour near Bladenboro this month

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A $1.3 million road resurfacing project will mean a detour near Bladenboro later this month.

The NC Department of Transportation will detour traffic along NC 131/242/410 near Bladenboro beginning Monday, July 13. During the month of July, crews will remove the asphalt and some of the dirt subgrade to make room for new, thick pavement as part of the resurfacing.

The detour will start Monday around 8 a.m. The detour will use Old Abbottsburg Road, Grimsley Farm Road, NC 211 and the NC 211 Bypass in Bladenboro for all traffic flowing through Bladenboro on NC 410, NC 242 and NC 131 (North and South Main Street).

The project is scheduled to wrap up by August, weather permitting.

The DOT says the project was scheduled with the hope of having the least effect on Bladenboro Primary School and Bladenboro Middle School activities.

The project will involve asphalt surface treatment as part of NCDOT’s yearly resurfacing for roadway preservation. Pavement preservation is like changing the oil in your car, as basic maintenance can help avoid more expensive repairs later. It’s important to make minor improvements to good roads regularly because it delays major road repairs that are much more costly, time-consuming and disruptive to motorists. The contractor crews will repair cracked or weathered pavement, which will extend the life of the roads, reduce further maintenance needs and increase motorist comfort and mobility.

Highland Paving Company of Fayetteville is the contractor for project. The contract was awarded to the lowest bidder as required by state law.
