Roads closed as flood water rises in northern Brunswick County
NORTHWEST, NC (WWAY) — Five days after Hurricane Matthew, people across the Cape Fear are still working to get things back to normal. And while some flood waters are receding, there are still roads closed in a number of areas.
Blue Banks Loop Road near Mount Misery Road in northern Brunswick County has been closed since this weekend. Northwest City Councilor James McKoy says the water is more than four feet deep in some parts.
The road is blocked off in all directions, but an officer with the Northwest Police Department says most of the homes are on either side of the flooding, which means most people are not blocked off from their houses.
McKoy says flooding is something this area is used to.
Regardless McKoy says conditions over the last week have been trying, but he considers the city to be fortunate that it wasn’t worse.
“But there’s water. We’ve had a lot of flooding,” he said. “We have two homes over on the other side of Blue Banks Loop Rd. that were literally submerged by water all the way up to the vent pipes. It’s an issue we’ve been trying to get DOT to address for the last ten years.”
The water near those homes has since receded from, but the part of Blue Banks Loop Road that is flooded out is because of Hoods Creek, which feeds into the Cape Fear River.
McKoy says he’s just glad the area was able to make it through Matthew with no deaths and only limited property damage, and for that he considers the city blessed.
