SBI investigating inmate death at Columbus County Detention Center
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The SBI is now investigating the death of an inmate at the Columbus County Detention Center.
According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, Marcus Sanders was found in his cell during a routine welfare check.
Detention officers and deputies began lifesaving measures on Sanders. Whiteville Rescue then arrived on the scene and transported the inmate to Columbus Regional Healthcare System.
Despite lifesaving efforts, Mr. Sanders was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The area was secured and turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
The SBI says the case is currently under investigation by the SBI coastal district agents, and no further information is currently available.
