SC AG Wilson asks solicitor for additional review of Spivey shooting case investigation

COLUMBIA, SC (WPDE) — South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson requested Seventh Judicial Circuit Solicitor Barry J. Barnette to review the investigation of a deadly 2023 shooting in Horry County involving North Myrtle Beach businessman Weldon Boyd in a letter Oct. 3.
Wilson sent a letter to Barnette, asking him to review evidence from the incident on Camp Swamp Road that resulted in the death of Columbus County native Scott Spivey.
According to the letter, “On Sept. 15, 2023, the Fifteenth Circuit Solicitor requested my office to review the State Law Enforcement Division’s (SLED) investigation…which was primarily a review of the case built by the Horry County Police Department (HCPD).”
After this review, Wilson’s office declined to pursue charges against Boyd, saying he acted in self-defense when he shot Spivey.
The office cited the South Carolina Protection of Persons and Property Act.
