SC Ports Authority adding solar to terminal roofs

CHARLESTON, SC (AP) — The South Carolina Ports Authority is leasing the roofs of warehouses at its terminals in Charleston and Mount Pleasant to a company that generates solar power.

The authority announced on Friday that under a 25-year agreement the solar arrays will be maintained and owned by SolBright Renewable Energy.

There is no direct expense to the authority and the agreement is expected to generate about $1.5 million for the authority over the life of the lease.

Authority officials say the arrays will help offset port energy usage and will return power to the electric grid during peak hours of energy demand.

The solar arrays are expected to be installed by this summer.
