SCAM ALERT: Fake Brunswick deputy calling citizens
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Deputies urge citizens in Brunswick County to not fall for a scam in the area.
According to the sheriff’s office, a man is calling people in the county – especially the northern side – saying he’s a detective. The caller identifies himself as Sgt. Michael Snyder and tells people they have failed to appears for jury duty. The caller then instructs the resident to go to a local retailer and purchase two green dot cards in the amount $395 each. hen, the caller gives the resident a number to call to verify the purchase of a card.
Officials said at least two people have fallen victim to this scammer, and they ask that you contact the sheriff’s office.
Deputies added that if you hear someone say they are with the sheriff’s department, not sheriff’s office, then that should also be a red flag.
