SCAM ALERT: Fake WPD officer calling citizens

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say a person is using their front desk number to try to scam people.

A WPD spokeswoman says front desk personnel have screened more than 20 calls with the same story of a man with a foreign accent trying to say he’s an officer and he will arrest the person if they don’t purchase a money order. They say he uses a fake badge number identifying himself as Wilmington Police. Police say they have not received any reports of citizens being victimized.
