SCC recognized for success in prison education program

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Southeastern Community College was awarded a certificate of appreciation for completing the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction’s Vocational Challenge.
Offenders at Tabor Correctional Institution and Columbus Correctional Institution earned their high school equivalency diploma through the prison education and transitional studies programs at SCC.
In late October, SCC hosted a North Carolina Prison Education Symposium in the SCC auditorium where the award was accepted by Transitional studies recruiter/HSS examiner Larry Everette and educational facilitator Raymond Long.
“A mind is a terrible thing to waste,” Everette said. “Within those prison walls, all they have is time on their hands. Having Transitional Studies and the entire Prison Education system helping prepare these offenders to be model citizens once they are released, this is a win-win situation for everyone.”
SCC met their pass rate goal by doubling its high school equivalency test pass rate in 2025 over 2024.
