SCC to host summer pharmacy academy for high school students

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Southeastern Community College will host a two-day summer academy focused on pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences for high school students in June.
The PILLS Academy is scheduled for June 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the college’s campus. The program is offered in partnership with the University of North Carolina’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
The free program is designed for rising high school juniors and seniors, though some additional students may be considered if space allows. Organizers say the academy will accept up to 30 participants, with priority given to students from Columbus County.
According to Southeastern Community College, the program will include hands-on activities, panel discussions with pharmacists and pharmacy students and career exploration opportunities. Activities are expected to include demonstrations such as DNA extraction and compounding products.
Participants will also have access to a virtual mentorship program following the academy, organizers said.
The program is funded through the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, a nonprofit organization that supports biomedical research and STEM education, with a focus on rural communities in North Carolina.
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from campus.
