Sea Grant North Carolina warning beachgoers of rip currents

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Sea Grant North Carolina is reminding people heading to the beach this spring and summer to be wary of rip currents.
A rip current is a strong current that moves away from the shore. Rip currents often can be identified as a flat spot between breaking waves that can last minutes or months.

The National Weather Service officials report one death due to rip currents along the coast in 2014, and at least 58 deaths since 2000.

Simon Sanders, ocean rescue supervisor for Carolina Beach, said people should talk to lifeguards when enjoying the beach and always look out for friends and family while in the water.

Magnets, signs and brochures with the “Break The Grip Of The Rip” national safety message are available from North Carolina Sea Grant.
