Seahawk duo earns CAA honors; Walter Shaw picks up 300th career win at BCC

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Freshman playmaker Jordon Talley has been selected the Colonial Athletic Association’s Rookie-of-the-Week after propelling the UNCW men’s basketball team back into a share of first place in the conference standings.

A 6-0, 180-pound point guard from Richmond, Va., Talley averaged 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists as the Seahawks defeated the College of Charleston and Northeastern last week.

Talley scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 58-45 victory over the Cougars last Wednesday and added 14 points in a 66-61 decision against Northeastern on Saturday. The scrappy defensive specialist shot 52.9 percent from the floor and converted 13-of-17 at the free throw line in the two contests.

Talley, who has reached double figures in scoring eight times and led the Seahawks on three occasions, was also tabbed the league’s Rookie-of-the-Week back on Dec. 15.

He leads the Seahawks with 74 assists and ranks first in free throw percentage (.770) and fourth in scoring (8.5 ppg).

The Seahawks, 15-10 overall and 10-4 in the CAA, return to the court on Thursday, Feb. 19, with a 7 p.m. contest at Delaware.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — After leading the UNCW women’s basketball team to a pair of victories, sophomore guard Naqaiyyah Teague (Malcolm X. Shabazz H.S./Newark, N.J.) has been named as a co-recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week award for the week ending Feb. 15, it has been announced by CAA officials.

Teague, who is the fourth UNCW player to earn the weekly award this season, shared the award with James Madison University junior guard Angela Mickens (Robert E. Lee H.S./Staunton, Va.).

“I am proud of Naqaiyyah’s improvement over the course of the season,” Coach Adell Harris said. “She has been great in our last three games and I am happy she is being recognized by the CAA for her contributions to our success.”

While leading the Seahawks to a pair of conference wins over Elon and Northeastern, Teague averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. She also shot 56.5 percent from the field, including a 5-for-7 effort from three-point range.

She made 7 of 13 shots from the floor, including a 2-for-3 performance from beyond the arc, while converting all eight of her free throw attempts.

In the Seahawks’ 84-78 triumph over Northeastern on Sunday afternoon, Teague contributed 18 points with seven rebounds as the Seahawks overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half to earn their 10th win of the season. She was 6-for-10 from the field, including a 3-for-4 effort from long range, while making three of four free throws.

One of two UNCW players to start all 24 games this season, Teague is the Seahawks’ fourth-leading scorer with a 7.4 average. She is also tied for fourth in the CAA by grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game.

Led by Teague, UNCW will remain home on Thursday evening to welcome defending CAA champion James Madison to Trask Coliseum for a 7:00 p.m. match-up against the Dukes. JMU, which is a perfect 13-0 in league play this year, handed the Seahawks a 74-57 defeat in Harrisonburg on Jan. 6.
