Seahawk volleyball team sweeps Appalachian State
BOONE, NC (WWAY) — Maddy Kline‘s 12 kills led a balanced offense that saw three Seahawks with double-digit kills as UNCW opened its Black & Gold Classic appearance with a 3-0 sweep of host Appalachian State on Friday at the Holmes Convocation Center.
The Seahawks ran their record to 3-1 on the season with their second sweep of the season. With the loss, the Mountaineers evened their record at 2-2.
Leading 1-0 in sets, UNCW rallied with an impressive 11-1 run to close out the second set for a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead.
Kline was joined in double-digit kills by Kristen Powell and Nicole Lott. Sydney Brock added eight kills and a team-high six blocks. Kline posted her third career double-double while setter Alyssa Desjardins fashioned a double-double of 22 assists and 15 kills.
Defensively, Sydney Alvis posted a career-high 21 digs to lead the Seahawks, who placed four in double figured.
Emily Longley of Appalachian State held match-high honors with 13 kills, but was limited to a .016 hitting average. Setter Ashlyn Brown had a double-double of 30 assists and 11 digs.
From Coach Bambenek: “I’m so proud of the team effort in this match with multiple hitters making an impact,” said Bambenek. “Our blocking and defense was sustained from start to finish. We will need to stay focused to play a complete weekend, but I’m very happy with our results tonight.”
How it happened: UNCW was able to rebound from last weekend’s set back to Davidson with an impressive effort at the net. The Seahawks out blocked the Mountaineers, 9-4, and held ASU to a .094 hitting average.
Notes: UNCW improved to 7-10 all-time against ASU and has won the last two meetings … Sydney Alvis‘ previous career-high for digs was 19 against Charleston Southern on Aug. 29, 2015 … The Seahawks are 2-1 in sweeps this season … Nicole Lott had 17 digs to record UNCW’s third double-double effort of the match.
Up next: The Seahawks play Ohio at 10 a.m. on Saturday and close out the tournament with a 4 p.m. start against Wofford.
