Seahawks Softball advances to day 2 of CAA tournament after split


HARRISONBURG, Virginia (UNCWSports.com) – UNCW used a four-hit performance from junior Lacey Fox and a strong effort in the circle from senior Sarah Davis to remain alive in the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Championship, eliminating Towson with a 6-0 victory in the final game of the tournament’s opening day at Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday evening.

The win, which upped UNCW’s record to 20-28 on the season, advanced the Seahawks to an elimination game on Thursday at 1 p.m. against the College of Charleston. Towson dropped to 40-17 after falling for the second time on Wednesday.

Fox, who notched the first four-hit game of her career, went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. She was one of three Seahawks to record a multi-hit game as senior Kelsey Bryan and sophomore Dominique Travers each tallied two hits.

Davis, meanwhile, worked the first five innings for UNCW to earn her seventh win of the season. The Burlington, N.C., product scattered two hits over those five frames with a pair of strikeouts. Junior Haley Lenderman gave up one hit in the final two innings to nail down her third save of the year.

Melissa Abrahamian took the loss for Towson after giving up three runs on four hits over 1.2 innings for the Tigers, who were outscored by a 15-4 margin in their two losses on Wednesday.

How It Happened: UNCW took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and never looked back. Fox drove in the first run with a single through the left side in the first inning before Travers and Fox each added RBI singles in the second frame.

Inside the Box Score: Davis did not allow a hit until the fifth inning … The Seahawks were 6-for-18 with runners in scoring position and 5-for-12 in two-out situations … Davis and Lenderman combined to induce 13 ground ball outs by the Tigers … Towson was 2-for-13 in advancement opportunities.

Notes: UNCW improved to 4-7 all-time in the CAA Championship … The Seahawks and the Tigers faced each other in the tournament for the first time … Lenderman secured her fifth career save in Wednesday’s win, matching the school record set by Jamie Gostyla from 2002-05 … Lenderman also tied Gostyla’s single-season saves mark, which was set in 2002 … UNCW improved to 5-0 this season when recording 10 or more hits in a game … UNCW’s senior class of Bryan, Davis and Tracy Haynes have now won 103 games in their career, tying the program record … UNCW has now won 20 or more games in three consecutive seasons.
