Seahawks unveil 2017-18 CAA women’s hoops slate
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Coach Karen Barefoot and the UNCW women’s basketball team will begin their 2017-18 Colonial Athletic Association schedule on Friday, Dec. 29, with a visit to defending league champion Elon.
The contest against the Phoenix opens an 18-game league gauntlet that features a home-and-home series against each of the other nine CAA opponents.
“I am excited to be coaching again in the CAA,” said Barefoot, who was named as the Seahawks’ coach in May. “It is a very talented league with some great teams and we look forward to competing against them this season.
“The conference did a nice job with this year’s schedule and I think our fans will enjoy seeing us compete against our league opponents. It should be an exciting year.”
Following the conference opener, UNCW returns home on New Year’s Eve to begin a three-game homestand against William & Mary.
Coach Barefoot’s squad opens the 2018 calendar year with home contests against league foes Northeastern (Jan. 5) and Hofstra (Jan. 7) before visiting Towson and Drexel on the following weekend.
After hosting Delaware and James Madison on Jan. 19 and 21, UNCW opens a three-game road swing with a rematch against the Blue Hens on Sunday, Jan. 28, in Newark, Del. The Seahawks will also face Northeastern and Hofstra for a second time, this time on the road.
The College of Charleston visits Trask Coliseum on Friday, Feb. 9, before UNCW faces Drexel at home for the second time on Sunday, Feb. 11.
Another three-game road swing follows for the Seahawks, with visits to William & Mary (Feb. 16), James Madison (Feb. 18) and Charleston (Feb. 23).
The regular season ledger draws to a close with a pair of home games against Towson on Thursday, Mar. 1, and Elon on Saturday, Mar. 3.
The CAA Championship will be held in Philadelphia at the Daskalakis Athletic Center from Mar. 7-10, with the champion earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
