Seasonal respiratory illnesses increase in North Carolina

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services says there’s an increase in flu activity and flu-related deaths in the state.
Within the past week, there were three flu-related deaths reported bringing the total for the season to nine. This is greater compared to this time last season. So far, there have been no reports of children dying from the flu.
For 2024-2025 respiratory virus season, North Carolina reported 542 flu-related deaths which was the highest number of statewide flu deaths recorded.
The influenza A (H3N2) virus strain has spread worldwide and is the most frequently reported flu virus reported so far.
“Flu is spreading quickly across North Carolina,” said State Epidemiologist Zack Moore, M.D, MPH. “The influenza vaccine remains the most important tool to prevent serious illness or death from flu. It’s not too late to protect yourself and your loved ones.”
Flu activity is surging as holiday travel is picking up.
NCDHHS says vaccines are important for higher risk individuals including people 65 years or older, children younger than 5, pregnant women, and those with a weakened immune system.
NCDHHS has information online regarding where to get vaccinated, respiratory illness communications toolkit, and a respiratory surveillance summary that is updated weekly.
