Seizure of 696 animals in NC sets ASPCA record

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The almost 700 animals seized from a no-kill shelter in North Carolina sets a record for the ASPCA, the group that’s now caring for the pets.

ASPCA spokeswoman Kelly Krause said Tuesday the organization has rescued 696 animals from The Haven-Friends for Life in Hoke County since last week. The previous record for companion animals rescued from one location was 692 cats rescued in 2012 in Lee, Florida.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is caring for the animals at two warehouses about an hour southwest of Raleigh.

Stephen Joseph and Linden Spear managed The Haven and appeared in court last week on animal cruelty charges. A family friend said last week that the Spears dedicated their lives to caring for the animals.
