Sen. Burr raised $1.7M in 2nd quarter for re-election bid
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr has raised $1.7 million during the past three months and has $3.8 million in cash set aside for his re-election bid in 2016.
The Winston-Salem Republican’s campaign released fundraising numbers Tuesday, a day before federal second-quarter finance reports are due.
The figures are slightly lower than what Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan raised during the same quarter the year before her unsuccessful 2014 campaign. While Hagan had at least two announced Republican challengers by then, Burr has no such Democratic rivals yet. Hagan said last month she wouldn’t try to run against Burr.
Democrats in Washington argue Burr is still vulnerable during a high-turnout presidential election year. Burr’s profile has increased since Republicans took over the Senate and Burr became intelligence committee chairman.
