Senate to act swiftly on override on McCrory marriage veto

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A powerful state senator says his chamber will debate and vote right away on whether to override Gov. Pat McCrory’s veto of a measure allowing some court officials to refuse to perform gay marriage duties because of religious objections.

Sen. Tom Apodaca of Hendersonville manages the state Senate’s work schedule. He said the override question will be brought to the Senate floor Monday night – the first legislative day since McCrory vetoed the bill late last week.

Apodaca says he sees no problem having enough votes to cancel McCrory’s veto in the Senate. Three-fifths of the senators present and voting must agree to override. From there the bill would go to the House, where the override outcome is less certain.
