Sewer repairs to impact busy S. College intersection

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Emergency sewer repairs will force lane closures and shifts at a busy intersection on South College Road.

Cape Fear Public Utility Authority contracted crews will create a work zone that is likely to have a significant impact on traffic moving through the area. Spokesman Mike McGill said it is an area that has been an issue for drivers for a while.

McGill said the work zone, which will involve road and lane closures, as well as lane shifts, will start on April 30 and last 24 hours a day for approximately seven days. The work will be conducted around-the-clock to minimize the impact on the area.

McGill said while the repair is standard in nature, work at this site is difficult given the high volume of traffic on S. College Road. The failing manhole is in the right-hand, northbound lane of S. College Road at the intersection of Park Avenue.

The work zone will begin just before Peachtree Avenue and end just after Park Avenue. Two lanes of northbound S. College. To accommodate the traffic, the center turn lane and one lane of southbound S. College Road will be closed to allow for lane shifts that will allow two lanes of traffic to flow in each direction.

Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes. Multiple traffic signs will be used throughout the area to assist drivers and speed limits will be reduced.
