SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — Two Shallotte police officers were recognized with the Life Saving Award on Tuesday night for their heroic efforts in rescuing a young girl from drowning.

During the Shallotte Board of Aldermen meeting, Sergeant Jeremy Ferguson and Officer Christopher Brown were honored for their actions on Sunday, when they responded to an alarm at the Cardinal Pointe Clubhouse.

According to the Shallotte Police Department, while the officers were on scene, a bystander alerted them to an unresponsive child in the pool. Officer Brown quickly pulled the girl from the water as Sergeant Ferguson checked for a pulse and called for EMS. Officer Brown then began CPR, cycling chest compressions and clearing water from the child’s airway.

After approximately three minutes of CPR, the child began breathing on her own.

Officials say the officers’ quick thinking and decisive actions directly saved the child’s life.
