Shallotte’s ‘Mason Dixon’ is a small business that makes a big difference
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — It’s getting colder across the Cape Fear and if you don’t have a warm coat or jacket. You’ll certainly need one.
A small business in Brunswick County is hoping people will support a project they’ve taken on to keep people warm this winter.
“It’s the feel you get when you walk in the door. You feel like you’re at home,” Customer, Ronda Baker said.
‘Mason Dixon’ is a gift shop in Shallotte that caters to kids and seniors, selling sizes small to 3X.
While it prides itself on great customer service, it is getting a lot of attention for its acts of service to the community.
Since 2017 the store has donated more than $175,000 to more than 100 different non-profits in Brunswick and Columbus Counties.
‘Mason Dixon’s’ most recent project returns during the colder months. It’s a free coat rack outside the store that the owner is especially passionate about.
“The first night we did it, we had 13 coats and 12 coasts found homes. People just continually everyday bring them in and we just put them out and they find their home,” Mason Dixon Owner, Wendy Brown said.
Brown said she leaves the rack out at night so that anyone who might need a coat can come at any time.
“There’s no questions asked. You take it, it’s right outside. You don’t have to have a conversation with anybody in this store,” Brown said.
She said it’s common to see children’s coats go first.
“And then coats like sizes extra-large and up. I think that’s because people can layer them,” Brown said.
‘Mason Dixon’ also donates 5% of every purchase to a non-profit of your choice.
WWAY’s Emily Andrews, even selected a non-profit of her own to donate to while checking out. It’s called ‘Waves 4 Kids.’ Their mission is to support children under the care of social services.
One of the store’s regular customers said ‘Mason Dixon’ is a small business that has made a big difference.
“It’s so wonderful that we have a shop that you can come to that you feel the way you do when you go in,” Customer, Ronda Baker said. “But it’s also important that she gives back to the community because there’s so many people who do not.”
