Shark kills diver in attack off Australian coast

AUSTRALIA (WWAY) — A diver has been killed by a large shark off the west Australian coast in the country’s second fatal attack in less than a week.

Western Australia state police say the 60-year-old woman was diving with a man at a popular dive spot off the northern Perth suburb of Mindarie on Sunday when the shark attacked.

Three men on a nearby boat saw that something was happening and went to assist. They positioned their boat between the shark and the dive boat so that the man could get back into his vessel. Western Australian police inspector Danny Mulligan said the woman’s dive partner managed to pull her out of the water after she was attacked but her injuries proved fatal.

On Tuesday, surfer, Ben Gerring lost his leg when it was bitten off by a shark at Mandurah beach about 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of where the woman was killed. On Friday he died of his injuries.
