Shelters full: How sponsorships and donations can help

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– Jewell Horton, manager of the Pender County Animal Shelter, shared that not only her shelter, but shelters nationwide are operating at full capacity.

Horton explained, “The economic downturn has made it difficult for many families to afford pet care. A year ago, a bag of dog food cost $25; now it’s $40. Veterinary expenses are also a burden. These factors are forcing people to surrender their pets.”

The shelter is not only working to find permanent homes for surrendered animals but is also exploring ways to assist families struggling to keep their pets. One innovative solution is their “sponsorship” program. As Horton put it, “Many people who can’t adopt are stepping up to sponsor animals. They cover adoption fees, making it easier for others to adopt.”

Nina Moulton recently contributed $500 to the shelter, which will cover the adoption fees for 50 cats or 12 dogs. “If you can’t adopt, donate!” Moulton encourages others to support the shelter’s efforts.

Despite being at full capacity, the Pender County Animal Shelter maintains its open admission policy. This means they will not turn away any animal, whether it’s a local resident or one found in the area.
