Sheriff’s Office hosts first boater’s safety day

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Warmer weather on the coast means more boaters taking advantage of the sunshine. Now the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is making boat safety a priority.

The Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit partnered up with Wildlife and the United States Coast Guard to host the their first ever boater’s safety day.

The day long course went over getting a boat ready in the prep lane, putting the boat in the water, safety tips and much more. As summer is approaching fast, the Sheriff’s Office said it is important to be prepared when out on the water.

“Being on a boat is very serious. You’re there to have fun, but you’re also making sure you’re aware of your surroundings that’s going on because at anytime someone could go over, you could have an issue, you know? There’s a lot of things to consider when you’re on the water,” Lt. Jerry Brewer said.

The Sheriff’s Office plans to do this class annually to help the community learn more about boater’s safety.
