Sheriff’s office looking at options for K9 with bite history
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Commission planned to discuss a resolution to donate a sheriff’s K9 to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office next week. The dog, however, has a history of biting.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Jerry Brewer said commissioners planned to discuss the resolution Monday morning to give K9 Funny to Brunswick County, but that item has now been taken off of the agenda. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is down a K9 after their German Shepherd Moncey died suddenly earlier this month. Moncey was a bomb-sniffing dog. Funny is trained in that area as well.
K9 Funny is the same dog who bit a child on the leg while on a break in late March. Brewer said that wasn’t the only biting incident with the Malinois dog.
Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Emily Flax said while they are very grateful for the gesture, they say K9 Funny isn’t the right fit for their department and they are continuing to explore other options. Brewer said they’re discussing their options with Funny too, including rehabilitation. The K9 has not been on duty since the incident with the child.
The cost for the K9 is $15,000, Brewer said.
