Shot fired at deputy responding to crash in near Whiteville

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County deputy was shot at after responding to a crash near Whiteville.

According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a vehicle accident on Country Club Road on Monday night.

When the deputy went to check on the vehicle, a man fired his gun near him

The driver later used the gun on himself and was found dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office detectives are handling the investigation, and the Highway Patrol has completed a report on the vehicle accident.
