Signs put up to help drivers detour Brunswick Co. busy intersections
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — NCDOT officials are urging drivers coming into Brunswick County for the holiday to avoid intersections prone to heavy traffic volume.
The big area of discussion is the road work in the Southport and Oak Island area coupled with the many July 4th celebrations in the area.
“I’ve been told it gets busy but I am new to the area so we will have to see this weekend,” said Dale Woodbridge.
Dealing with traffic is just part of life, says many residents.
“Whether it’s a football game, a soccer game, or you go to the North Carolina for the Fourth of July, you’re going to have to wait in line,” said Jim Saulsbury. “But it’s all part of enjoying yourself and having a good time.”
A NCDOT spokesman said while you have a great time, you need to use caution in busy traffic and construction areas.
The three popular intersections:
- N.C. 211 (Southport-Supply Road SE) and N.C. 133 (Long Beach Road SE)
- N.C. 179 (Old Georgetown Road SW) and N.C. 904 (Seaside Road SW)
- N.C. 211 (Southport-Supply Road SE) and Middleton Boulevard.
Officials say if you can avoid these areas with the suggested detours, it should help the overall traffic headaches. They say signs posted can help you with this.
Examples of signs posted in the county:
- U.S. 421, just off of U.S. 74 heading from Wilmington towards Leland: this message urges drivers heading to Oak Island to use U.S. 17 to Middleton Bridge
- U.S. 17, approaching Bolivia and U.S. 17 Business: this message asks for Oak Island traffic to take U.S. 17 Business to Midway Road
- N.C. 211, approaching Middleton and Supply towards Southport: message asks for drivers to turn at next right for Oak Island
There are other signs also in the Ocean Isle Beach and Calabash area to help motorists navigate that area as well.
