Site along South Front Street one step closer to being rezoned

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An area south of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge on the Wilmington side may eventually be transformed into new developments.

The Wilmington Planning Commission approved the rezoning of 2.37 acres of land along South Front and Marstellar Streets on Wednesday.

This area includes an old brick building where scenes for the drama television series, One Tree Hill, were filmed.

The rezoning would change the land from a light industrial to an urban mixed-use district.

Wilmington resident Paul Connor said he’s glad the site could soon be used differently.

“That areas always needed a little bit of an improvement and I feel like its been kind of a bad representation of our city when you come, come over the bridge and if you take the off ramp and circle around and come down Front Street going south,” Connor said. “You know, you’ve got the industrial complex on the right right there and it would be nice to have something a little bit more beautiful in that area.”

The rezoning passed by a vote of 5-2.

The next step is going to the city planning board for additional approval.
