Smoke in eastern Pender County traced to Onslow fires

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Residents in eastern Pender County may notice periods of dense smoke drifting through the area, according to the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Officials say the smoke is coming from two active fires burning in neighboring Onslow County. At this time, there are no active wildfires within Pender County contributing to the conditions.
Authorities say weather patterns and wind direction are carrying the smoke southward into parts of Pender County.
Pender County fire crews and emergency personnel are monitoring the situation and remain in communication with partner agencies. Officials say updates will be provided if conditions change.
While the smoke is not from a local fire, residents are urged to call 911 if they see flames or a fire in their immediate area so it can be investigated.
